Applications are open March 23–27 for Utah Elementary Robotics (UER) at Bountiful Elementary. Current 5th grade and 6th grade students are invited to apply for this spring robotics opportunity, where students work in teams to build and program a robot for competition.
The Utah Elementary Robotics competition will take place on Friday, May 15, at Lagoon from 10:00am to 3:00pm. In this STEM program, 5th grade teams will compete in a maze-style speed challenge, while 6th grade teams will compete in sumo-style robot matches. Multiple teams of two will represent Bountiful Elementary and compete against other schools across Utah.
What makes Utah Elementary Robotics especially unique is that this is a code-first robotics experience. Students are not steering their robots with a controller—they are programming them to think through the challenge ahead of time. Every turn, movement, and action must be planned, tested, and refined through code. It is an engaging way for students to experience computer science in action and discover how programming can bring a robot to life.
UER applications are available in the front office and will be sent home on Monday, March 23. Students must apply with a partner in their same grade. Space is limited, and late applications will not be accepted. All completed applications must be submitted by Friday, March 27.
Students who are accepted into the Bountiful Elementary robotics UER program will be notified via email by April 2nd. They must be able to attend:
a required kickoff meeting
Tuesday, April 7 for 5th grade
Thursday, April 9 for 6th grade
all practices on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:45–5:00 p.m., beginning April 14 in the Robotics Lab
the May 15 competition at Lagoon with a designated adult chaperone
Families should also be aware of the program fees:
$20 registration fee for all students, which includes a T-shirt they will wear at the competition.
$55 Lagoon entry fee for students who do not already have a season pass
$55 park entry fee for chaperones, unless they have a season pass
Transportation to and from Lagoon is the responsibility of each family. Each student must have a designated adult chaperone for the full day, as coaches will be supporting the competition and will not be available to supervise students outside of that role.
